Data cleaning, reimagined: a spreadsheet inside your survey platform

Why we built a native data grid instead of pushing you to Excel — and how AI-assisted cleaning cuts hours off every project.

Every experienced researcher knows the moment: fieldwork closes, the raw data lands, and before anyone can write a single insight, somebody has to clean it. Export to CSV. Open in Excel. Filter. Sort. Flag the straight-liners. Re-check the quotas. Recode the "Other — please specify" answers. Reconcile the open-ends. Then re-import. Then discover one more issue and repeat.

This shouldn't be the shape of the workflow anymore. So we rebuilt it.

The data grid, embedded

Tabular Pro includes a full spreadsheet-style data grid natively inside the platform. Not a preview. Not a read-only table. A real, editable data grid that behaves the way researchers expect — sortable, filterable, multi-select, keyboard-navigable, with frozen columns and paste-friendly cells.

Your responses, your codebook, your metadata — all in one place. No export, no re-import, no version drift.

AI-assisted flagging

The AI reads your dataset in context and flags responses worth a second look:

  • Straight-lining — a respondent picks the same answer down a grid.
  • Speeding — completion time is implausibly fast for the question load.
  • Contradictions — answers that can't both be true (e.g., "I never use social media" + "I post daily").
  • Gibberish open-ends — keysmash, profanity, copy-paste nonsense.
  • Duplicate signatures — same IP, same device fingerprint, same timing pattern.

Every flag is explainable. Click it and the AI shows you why — the specific pattern, the specific columns, the specific rule that triggered. Nothing is removed for you. You decide.

Recoding at the speed of thought

Select a column of "Other" responses. Ask the AI to suggest categories. Accept, reject, or edit. Apply. The new coded variable appears as a new column, with provenance preserved — you can always see the original verbatim and roll back the coding if you change your mind.

Recoding numeric brackets, collapsing scale points, reversing polarity, computing composites — all one-click operations in the grid, or a single natural-language instruction to the AI.

Why this matters

Cleaning used to be the invisible tax on every project: 20–40% of the time between fieldwork close and first deliverable. That time is gone in Tabular Pro. Not because we cut corners — the rigor is still there — but because the tools finally match what the work actually requires.

You still make every decision. The AI just stops making you do the bookkeeping.
